The island of Orango Grande, in the Bijagos archipelago off the coast of Guinea Bissau, is a land where all power lies in the hands of the women. A land where they organize themselves into associations to run the economy and social welfare, and to administer the law. It is they who impose the penalties, who give the orders, who provide advice, and who are in charge of distribution; and they are respected as the absolute owners of both the home and the land.
